Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The buzz about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
